As is now a tradition for 10 years, we finish out the 2017 touring season with the longest running tour for NC Touring a private motorcycle event that has been going on for since before the inception of NC Touring. Riders left from three different towns (Durham, Wilmington and Charlotte) to meet up in the morning, so that we would have more time in the mountains on day 1. We motored up back roads to Lake Lure for lunch. If you recall from last year, this planned segment was detoured due to the fires in the area.
We enjoyed burgers at a lake view restaurant, and talked about our plan for the rest of the day. We were only a 45 minute ride from our camp that night, but the weather was incredible. We threw out the option to continue to ride, as the temperatures neared 75 degrees on a November afternoon at elevation. We made our winding leg up over Gateway mountain, before settling down in Old Fort. All were in favor of dropping our gear and heading out for more twisties. We normally reserve that ride on Saturday, but we cruised up the Devil’s Whip and then down Diamondback. A quick stop in Little Switzerland to grab a coffee, and the it was back to camp for afternoon relaxation.
Again, another evening of freshly butchered filet mignon, and discussions about the days ride and what are plans were for the rest of the weekend. Unfortunately, rain settled in that evening, and continued through most of Day 2. We ventured out in the morning for some of the largest biscuits around at the Blue Ridge Biscuit Company. Only two of us ventured out in the mist to shake the cobwebs, as another run up an back over Gateway Mountain.
As per tradition for this tour, on the last day we cruised up 221 to the town of Linville Falls to enjoy breakfast at an institution: Louise’s Rockhouse! Once our bellies were full with country food it was off to the Parkway for another wonderful run. Several riders traded bikes for some of the sections and another run down Diamondback was completed. We then took backroads back to Gastonia, before separating. A great way to finish the Tour Season for 2017. Thank you to all of our clients, whether they be on motorcycles, in kayaks, or hiking their gear! See you on a tour in 2018!
